Meet Beth

I'm an early riser — hot coffee at home while the house is still quiet, then an iced coffee (very specific order, don't even ask) on my way out the door. That's the only way the day starts right. Most days from there it's running Jax Gifts, keeping up with my kids, and a whole lot of phone calls with family and friends — but when I get a chance, you'll find me on the tennis or pickleball court, or with a needlepoint project I've been "working on" for way too long.

Mahjong itself goes way back — tiles, laughter, and a bunch of us kids sitting around a table every summer at the bungalow colony. It wasn't really "a thing" for kids back then, but a few of us played anyway, and it stuck.

Fast forward to last summer: some friends here in Englewood asked me to teach them, and one of them told me I should really be doing this for real. So at the end of October, I started — and it grew faster than I ever imagined. I figured, who can actually play mahjong in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon? Turns out: a lot of people. Now I have a full mahjong room set up at home, with different sets and tables, people coming through all day and night. I've taught kids as young as six, hosted family lessons, and run a few tournaments for all ages. This summer I'll be traveling to camps to teach.

Mahj with Beth and Jax Gifts go hand in hand — because at the end of the day, they're both just Beth. Same personality, same energy, whether I'm teaching a game or putting together a gift.

I live in Englewood with my husband Ben and our three boys — ages 16, 15, and 8 — who all know how to play. My youngest is probably the best out of all of us.

What I Offer:

Private Lessons :One-on-one (or small group) instruction tailored completely to your pace. Perfect for beginners or players who want to sharpen their game. In-person or Zoom.

Group Classes : Grab your crew and come learn together. Great for friend groups, mom groups, sisters, neighbors — any combination. Regular classes also open to individuals.

Kids & Teens :Mahjong for the next generation. I run kids and teen classes that are age-appropriate, engaging, and actually fun. My 5th and 6th grade girls groups are legendary.

Corporate Events : Team-building with tiles. A mahjong session is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser — fun, social, and something totally different. I bring everything; you just show up.

Tournaments : I host and run mahjong tournaments — from friendly beginner brackets to more competitive formats. An unforgettable event with prizes, energy, and bragging rights.

Zoom Classes : Not in Bergen County? No problem. I teach over Zoom using a document camera so you can see every tile clearly. Same energy, same experience — just virtual.
